"Is that my body? My real body?" - Tears of joy often flow when our patients look in the mirror after their lipedema surgery, or take their first steps down our clinic's long hallway. Because every woman, no matter what stage of lipedema or what age, has had something stolen from her by this condition: confidence, the freedom to feel like herself, or the simple comfort of wearing her favorite clothes. In this post, we want to encourage you and share a few of our experiences. After all, as lipedema specialists, we're right at the source, and we can assure you - you're not alone.

Aesthetics & Health

Lipedema causes pain and limits you in everyday life - we're all aware of that. But what about aesthetics and how you look? Or even better: what about the boots and the dress in your closet that you used to love wearing? When was the last time you were at the beach and felt comfortable? When did you last wear shorts or a dress? We could go on with this list, but here's what we want to tell you: we know, from our patients, that lipedema means more than "just" pain and thick legs. Lipedema robs you of the freedom to be the woman you'd like to be.

It's hard to talk about, because this topic comes with so much shame and uncomfortable feelings attached. We see this every day. That's exactly why we're asking you: dare to talk about it! With other people affected, with us, with your best friend - it doesn't matter who. What matters is that you talk about the things that really move you. About stress with your partner, about uncomfortable looks, about unnecessary beauty standards, about the unworn shorts in your closet - about the things that truly affect you. In our experience, the psychological burden for lipedema patients is usually just as great, if not greater, than the physical pain.

Pain-Free and Beautiful?

The surgeries we perform - liposuctions - are fat-removal procedures. And even though this term is often associated with the phrase "cosmetic surgery," liposuction for lipedema has an almost exclusively medical purpose. That means our top priority is that you're healthy and can live pain-free. That said, our surgeons certainly also know that aesthetics matter just as much to you. That's why you can be sure that we do everything to achieve the best possible result for you. But first, it's about education and setting realistic expectations. Even after just a single lipedema surgery, you'll have lost several liters of fat. Naturally, that doesn't leave your body unaffected.

Sagging, loose skin or an uneven shape: your body image after surgery depends on your individual situation and on the severity and distribution of the fat. Certain areas of the body carry more strain and may need to undergo skin tightening. Precisely because there are so many factors involved, our surgeons need to see and examine your lipedema in person. Only that way can they determine the distribution of the fat and the specifics of your individual situation.
