Condescending looks, disrespectful comments, the wildest statements from doctors - what we've already had to hear from our patients always leaves us speechless. Have you had similar experiences? As we are a specialized clinic dealing exclusively with lipedema, we want to share our experiences with you here. But most of all, we want to encourage you and reach out to you if you're struggling with insecurity, a lack of support, or contempt.

"You should eat less for once and eat healthy"

... "and you should reconsider your career choice." You probably lacked the courage to give such a quick-witted answer. But you must have thought something like this when you and your condition were met with ignorance or contempt by medical professionals. Unfortunately, many people jump to hasty judgments. Not just in medical practice, but in everyday life too, women with thick legs are unfortunately often labeled "gluttons" and accused of never exercising. By the way, women with slender legs can have lipedema too. Especially in the early stages, the pathological fat distribution isn't always clearly visible. These variations in the clinical picture make it very difficult for an untrained eye to distinguish between lipedema, lymphedema, or obesity.

On top of that, besides the physical pain, psychological concerns are likely limiting you in your daily life too. Shame, fear of being seen in public, the feeling of having been "robbed of femininity" - all statements and feelings we unfortunately hear far too often from those affected. These feelings are, of course, only made worse by a lack of understanding and half-baked or condescending comments. You do what you can - exercise, watch your diet - but it has almost no effect, and instead the pain just keeps getting worse. So what can you do?

Where can I get my lipedema diagnosed?

"I don't even want to go to doctors anymore - they don't understand me anyway." If you've had negative experiences, this view is all too understandable. Fortunately, not all doctors are like that! Many take the time to listen and show real understanding for your suffering. And lipedema as a condition is also becoming better known. As a result, more and more physicians are able to recognize lipedema and take the right measures. Unfortunately, there are still no laboratory parameters or imaging procedures that can definitively indicate pathological lipedema and support the diagnosis. The decisive factor is therefore the surgeons' wealth of experience and know-how.
