The Lipedema Surgery Process
Every lipedema surgery begins with a detailed consultation, in which the patient's individual situation is assessed and all questions can be asked.
Particular attention is paid to weighing benefits against risks, since not every case of lipedema requires surgery. It's worth noting that conservative therapy must always come before any lipedema surgery. That's because, for many patients, conservative therapy also relieves symptoms and helps clarify whether surgery is indicated at the current time. It also prepares the tissue for surgery, which makes it essential.
Once all requirements for surgical therapy are met, the individual surgical steps are planned. In most cases, this means several separate operations, so the circulatory system isn't overly strained.
The interval between individual surgical steps should be at least 8 weeks.

Beforehand, additional examinations are recommended based on the patient's individual situation. To spare our patients extra trips and inconvenience, many examinations can also be carried out at our clinic (e.g., ultrasound, lab diagnostics).
You'll also have a conversation with our anesthesiologists. They contact patients by phone well before the surgery to discuss anesthesia, so no additional in-person visit is needed for this.
On the day of surgery, patients are welcomed by a nurse from our team. They conduct the admission interview, prepare the patient for surgery, and help ease initial anxiety through their empathetic approach.
After that, the surgeon speaks with the patient once more, plans the areas to be treated, and answers any final questions. This is followed by the anesthesia consultation.
The patient is then taken to the operating room. In a calm, relaxed atmosphere, anesthesia is induced, and the surgery takes place under deep anesthesia.
After surgery, patients are fitted with their flat-knit compression garment while still on the operating table, and then, with our help, taken to their pre-warmed bed.

Surgical Method
We favor water-jet-assisted liposuction (WAL). Unlike conventional methods, the fat is loosened from the surrounding tissue with a fine, fan-shaped jet of water using minimal force, and suctioned out at the same time. Important structures such as nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels are spared. The majority of fat cells remain viable.

How Should Patients Prepare for Surgery?
An important prerequisite for surgery is being in good physical condition, along with preparing the tissue through several weeks of compression therapy using a personal flat-knit garment. Manual lymphatic drainage can further help optimize the tissue for surgery.
